Sports Curriculum
Since Sports College designation, Ellowes Hall has continually looked at the way it promotes a healthy lifestyle to its students.
Sport continues to be a growing business and an attractive vocation for many students at Ellowes Hall and this year saw our fourth cohort leave with 100% success in their BTEC qualifications. We have successfully extended our BTEC programme to include the BTEC First certificate and First Diploma in Sport as well as the BTEC National Award and National Certificate in Sport and Exercise Science.

We proudly boast a team of specialist PE staff who can teach a multitude of sports to a high standard. This allows us to offer a broad, yet balanced, Key Stage Three curriculum that engages all students. Our Key Stage Four curriculum offers a wide range of accredited courses such as the Sports Leaders Award, Dance Leaders Award, Pool Lifeguard, First Aid and Fitness Leaders Award in addition to the more complimentary activities; kickboxing, judo, aerobics, yoga and fitness training.

In September 2009 all Year 10s participated in the Sports Enterprise Award in their core PE lessons. This encourages all students to use their skills towards an entrepreneurial project. This could be coaching sessions; organising interhouse sports events; assisting with sports day; devising a website etc. Through collaboration with the Enterprise Centre each student should be able to reach a grade B at GCSE. After a successful start, we are now making Sports Enterprise a compulsory element of our KS4 core PE programme.

Healthy Schools

Since designation, Ellowes Hall has continually looked at the way it promotes a healthy lifestyle to its students. This has led to a dedicated team of staff and students working together to ensure the school promotes physical and emotional health by equipping pupils with the skills and attitudes to make informed decisions about their health.

In July 2008 Ellowes Hall Sports College was awarded the local and National Healthy Schools status under the new accreditation criteria which centre around four major themes: physical activity; healthy eating; emotional health and well being; and personal, social and health education.

Phases

Dean Hill (Head of the Physical Task Group for the Primary Care Trust) and Russ Tipson (Director of Action Heart) have been instrumental in the setting up of Phases.

‘Phases’ is a 12-14 week course developed to promote healthy, active lifestyles and is a programme of physical activity, exercise and dietary advice. Most sessions are gym based. However, circuit training, swimming, fun games and activities will also be included.

This innovative programme is offered to all Ellowes Hall students at the outset and then the rest of Dudley. If you would like your child to join please see a member of the P.E. department, your GP or the School Nurse.
