Remembrance at Ellowes Hall Sports College, part of Invictus Education Trust, is always a moment of deep reflection, a time to recognise the courage, sacrifice and service of those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today.
This year, the school’s commemorations carried particular significance as they marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day, paying tribute to the generation who served during the Second World War. The ceremony was led by 100-year-old D-Day veteran Joe Bullock, who was recently awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Dudley.
Joe, who remains an inspiration to many across the region, led the school’s memorial parade before joining staff and students in a moving act of remembrance. Earlier this year, Ellowes Hall created a VE80 Memorial Garden, featuring the faces of local men and women connected to the school community who served in WWII. Joe was honoured as the 80th face in the garden, a fitting tribute for this milestone year.
Headteacher Mr Rogers said: “It was a privilege to have Joe with us, his presence brought history to life in a way none of us will forget. It was typical of that great generation that he downplayed his own role simply telling students that, 'we got through it didn't we as these things happen'".
